Sometime back in our 3rd yr, Jeethu, Subbu, Viswa and I were chatting near the ground where our college buses, which are about to leave in half an hour, were parked. Our talk is about to drift from sem-end exams, subjects and up-coming interviews to sleazy jokes and girls . There entered a guy, whom I know by face, from mechanical branch. I asked casually “So, what are the companies you people are getting? I mean core mech companies?”. He sighed and heaved, finally made up “Oh! Actually very few core companies recruit from general engineering colleges. All they need is IITians and NITians. Its not like CS. Any layman can sit before computer and type. Even IT companies have confidence in us (non-IT branches) that we can learn it. But, Mechanical isn’t like that. It’s tough!”. My blood raged, as I am an CS chauvinist, and my mind rebelled “Ignorant Fuck!”. Jeethu, Viswa and Subbu are also visually dissapointed by this stupid remarks. But we couldn’t start up a fight, there, with some fellow who is as ignorant as this one. So, we left him to the shade of a tree, nearby.

Information Technology is not Computer Science. Its just a part of CS, which is made glamorous in India because it brings big bucks. Majority of Indian IT industry is loosely related to core CS. It’s more inclined towards business applications which their client ask for. Whereas CS is all about understanding and empowering the machine. If research in IT industry is all reducing the project development time, increasing efficiency of personnel, innovating methods to satisfy the client etc. It is about challenging the Turing’s test, improving an efficient neural nets, solving Traveling Sales Person problem in a better way etc. in CS. A person, who truly admires and understands CS, knows the beauty of it.

The beauty of CS lies in the understanding the intricacies of back propagation algorithm. It lies in the appreciating the subtlety of Boolean algebra. It lies in the realization of the simplicity of Karnaugh maps. It lies laughing at the ambiguity of ambiguous grammars and ultimately learning it. It lies in aesthetic structure of network protocol stacks. It lies in complexity of probabilistic inference. It lies in the fun involved in understanding different page management algorithms. It lies in the fact that CS is a SCIENCE. A pure science. A direct descendant of the Mother of all braches of knowledge, Mathematics.

Many people equate CS with IT out of ignorance. Whether it is due the fact that it’s most job creating section emerging out of CS or the lack of basic awareness about CS, only they could answer. To survive in IT field, to develop business applications, to code in Java or J2EE, you need not be a CSian. Any one can learn it and do it but considering it as CS is as ignorant as declaring a mountainous iceberg hidden in the ocean as a pebble just by seeing it’s tip. Some times, I laugh when an old quote given by my grandpa comes to my rememberence. Its goes as “Yeddukeemi telusu atukula ruchi” which you can comfortably translate as “How can a dog appreciate the taste of a butterscotch” . Hehee.

Simply, IT is just a rich great grand son of CS. Nothing more, nothing less.

This story is a continuation from here.

6:15 PM, 22 Mar’08

” What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your mamma, What I’ve got you’ve got to give it to your pappa……. Give it away! Give it away! Give it away, now!”, RHCP is screaming out of my speakers at full volume to the ire of my brother. I cant hear a thing because the rock sound completely made me deaf to all other sounds. Suddenly, my bro slamed the door open and screamed ” Your phone is ringing!”.

Rakesh, over phone “arey! We are at the gate of your apartment. Viswa, Dinesh, Jeethu and I. Come down!”. I raced down with my cell still in my hand, joined them and started chatting. Viswa, surreptitiously came from my back and in an instant, my cheeks and neck are powdery. Dinesh , jeethu, rakesh joined the party to spoil my hair, too. Finally, they all screamed “Happy Holi bava!”. I throwed a wry smile because thats the only thing I can do in that situation. Rakesh started the conversation saying that jeethu started it all by coming to their gym and colouring their faces. I asked “Whats the fking color you had on my face!”. Dinesh answered with a smile ” Its pink! “. I raced up the stairs, cleaned up my face and got down to head towards srinivas house.

6:45 PM, 22 Mar’08

Srinivas greeted us with a big smile, “Hi all!” and pointing towards me “I asked this ass to come to beach, this morning, to celebrate holi. Ahh! I enjoyed like hell.” leaves a sigh and finishes “Just now, I has a long bath and am fresh now!”. But, we are completely in another mood. ‘We are here to make you dirty, again’ screamed our evil brains, inside us. As, he came near me, I throwed a fist full of color on his face and others joined the routine. “Theja! you are a fking asshole! I called, in the morning, and you said – take lite! and now …shit!”. I sported a big grin unabashedly showing all my teeth. After settling down a bit “Ok! lets go to Rahul’s house!” said Rakesh with a wink. “Yea! lets go” answered Srinu and I. But Dinesh and viswanath has other plans for us.

Suddenly an egg splashed on my head! Before I could turn back and realise who made my hair stink, there’s jeethu and srinivas already messed up with the stuff which we generally use to make an omlette . Immediately, rakesh went into srinivas’ house and came out with 2 eggs. Its revenge time . I splashed one on the neck of dinesh and rakesh took care of viswanath. I went inside and cleaned up myself. But srinivas has one egg in his pocket and is slowly approaching me. I thought “This ass is up against me!”. So, I cried “Ass ! no more gimmicks. I know you ve an egg in your pants!”. The moment i said it, viswa just squeezed that egg in the pants( say pockets) of srinivas to make him more messy . Srinivas cried “You are a fking asshole! Why are so afraid ? I am not after you!”. I just replied “How the fk I can know that you are not after me when you are coming towards me with an egg up your pants? “. Everybody burst into a laughter and we headed towards rahul’s house only after jeethu emptied a bucket full of water over viswa.

7:30 PM, 22 Mar’08

I grabbed Viswa’s cell, entered Rahul’s number and hit the dail button. We are under this dark shade of a tree before his apartment. Dinesh and I started some conversation with him. In a minute, he’s down with us. This time, its srinivas, who took the initiative. He came towards rahul’s back and done the ritual of egg spalshing . Before Rahul could realise what really happened, his face is coloured by all of us. “You! You! You know that you belong to my fking project batch and I am your leader! You are finished! I will tell the project guide and he’ll rip ur ass off!” pointing towards srinivas. Srinivas, merrily laughing and was trying to reply. Finally he managed “Come on! It holi time” with a smirk on his face. Rahul derisively replied “Fk it!”

Now, we need more people, no just faces. Call it bakras. Viswa called Pavan and acted wonderfully. He convinced him to join us, at rahul’s house. Dinesh and Viswa are busy mixing colors with the egg yolk. Dinesh used some creative (or say stupid , as Rahul puts it ) technique to pour colors into the egg yolk with out breaking it….waah! They are just about to finish it, Pavan entered and brought srikanth along with him! “Anyone is welcome here! More the faces, better the fun” we thought. Pavan managed to brake his kinetic, just before my parked splendor where viswa placed the egg. I thought “Oh! This guy would ve seen that! shit..a bit late” . But to my relief, pavan didnt notice anything and infact said ” Why are your faces like that?”. Pointing towards srinivas head , he added “Is that crow’s shit?”. We laughed “Its that very same shit, you are having on your face, now” after splashing the special color yolk egg on his face . Srikanth got one, too.

..to be continued!

A unbearably elongated drama which neither entertains nor enlightens. Ali, AA’s dance and PR’s action spark.

Some films entertain, some films enlighten, some films connect with the audience. But this film doesnt accomplish anything of the above. This Film takes itself too seriously but if a film does so, it asks for some serious acting by the lead actor, which doesn’t happen in this case.

Yes! Arjun performed well, in compared to his old movies but thats not enough for this role. His inadequacy in histrionics is clearly evident in the scene where drunken PR emotes exceedingly well wheres AA just twitches his lip and sports a deadpan expression. Another scene, where his amateur dialogue modulation is exposed clearly is the climax confrontation between PR and him. Nevertheless, we can pardon all this because he’s just an young actor and is improving fast. He danced with elan and made that nammavemogani song memorable. My favourite number Parugulu teeyake is ruined with some stupid constumes and getups. Coming to PR, he’s becoming repetitive but nevertheless , he gives what the scene demands. His performance is the best thing about this film. Sheela neither has a beautiful face nor done some ground breaking performance. She is a miscast. Jayasudha is wasted. Ali sparks.

The biggest culprit of the film is the story. Actually, there’s no story . The director takes upon a sensitive concept and drags it monotonously. Since, comparisions are inevitable with his previous film which is blockbuster, I will dwell into that too. Bommarillu, too, is made upon a senstive subject about over-obsessive parents who dictate their sons’ career and marraige, which happens to be the most important constituents of the life. But, this film is loved alike by sons and parents since it culminated with a convincing climax where both the parties will be left satisfied. All this is due to the extra ordinary scene where PR and siddhu act as if its their last movie.

Coming back to this movie, it cant boast of such a convincing climax. The films repeatedly bashes you with that idea of elopement to the ire of the audience and atlast, says otherwise. The entertainment qoutient is also low because of non-existance romance and comedy though sunil evokes a few laughter, here and there.

The song in the shed (Nammavemo) is picturised well and Allu danced to style, the scene where Allu chases down the bus to help the eloped couple in vizag (personally, my favourite), Ali’s comedy and PR’s drunken scene are a few positives that you ll find in the movie.

Finally, Bhaskar failed to recreate the magic of Bommarillu.

My Rating: 1/5

PS: It bored the hell outta me!

Special Mention: It would’ve been better, if the roles of poonam bajwa and heroine are interchanged. poonam is sexy

Its customary for all the professors to while away first few classes of freshers without any lectures. Whether its due to the fact that they aren’t ready, yet, to take up the classes or to wait for all the students to enroll, only God knows. So, most of the classes at the beginning of the first semester are devoted to ‘so called’ introductory sessions. They say “All of you will spend 4 yrs together in life. So, you gotta know each other well”. Yeah! What they said is absolutely right, but to tell the truth , no one will know each other in those introductory sessions becuase people just repeat the lines of the previous one.

A guy ascended the podium of the class and told his name, inter marks, 10th marks and everything thats customary as if he is being recorded. Then , the professor asked ” Why did you join CS?”. The answer was “Its hot! Its happening! Its booming! “. The professor laughed.

“Whats hot, actually? Is it the fact(or myth) that IT and ITES sector provide a lot of openings? and whats booming? Does it represent the fact(or myth) that the then IT sector is burgeoning in strength. Whatever the meanings of those words, its an insanely stupid idea to join an academic course or to select a specific stream just by judging the openings in a sector of it. Its never wrong to join a course or a stream if it ensures you some exciting future prospects but that doesnt mean that thats the only reason of joining it. Thanks for the pressure from parents, who themselves are half-knowledged.

For a first year student, joining a course with out knowing why he joined it is not really a big mistake. But deluding himself with the same reason till his 4th year is. B.Tech, for that sake any academicsourse, should be taken as a learning experience but not as a ticket to job. The mistake lies in the system: Students, Colleges and Parents. If we take students, how many have the luxury of taking an genuinely independent decision regarding his engineering stream? (I thank my dad for giving me this liberty ). I saw lot of people who are disinterested in engineering, in first place. And then I saw many people couldnt manage to a seat in EE (read ECE) , thus contending themselves for a seat in CS. I dont understand this mad craze for EE in AP, considering the fact that many EE guys end up with IT jobs which make their 4 years of learning in EE , literally meaningless. Coming to colleges, their first target is pass percentage for rankings in JNTU list, then placements for popularity among parents circle. They never really bother about the quality of teaching, to the peril of students. Parents are also culprits for this vicious notion. The general notion among (Great?) Indian middle class people is “lets walk the oft beaten road but with care to ensure u pick up some pebbles now and then.”. They fear thinking in any other way. They dont want their children to take risks(?). They want their life to be secure ( and they have their own reasons).

Parents always love their children. So, they wont change. Colleges will never change until a universtiry called JNTU grants colleges to every other businessman in AP. So, only one can change all this. He is the student who’s joining the course. He may not know everything when he joined the course. Why he joined and all. But, as he goes through his B.Tech. He should learn to take B.Tech as a learning experience and identify it as his first step towards his career ( not job).

And If you ask me, Is B.Tech a learning experience for u? My answer will be a definite yes! But dont ask me “What you ve learned?”

>>Next in series: CS != IT

The Spy: Satya

The ‘Bakra’: Pavan
The Saviour: Dilip
Second Assistant of the ‘Seth’ : Raju.

Support Cast
Rakesh, Rahul and I.

**************************************************

12:30 PM, 27 Mar’08

I just had a drink and am leisurely sitting near the bank at the college gate. Jeethu, Viswa,Rakesh, Srinivas, Pavan dropped in. Pavan is in a hurry. “Lets go…come on ..what are you waiting for?” . I said “The minute you get down the auto and wait for the bus, an egg will be splashed on your fking face. So, If you wanna go? its up to you.”. Rakesh and Viswa laughed and repeated the words and added “Lets wait for some time”. Jeethu nodded. But Srinivas , the perpetual hurry man, took the side of pavan and said “lets go, these asses wont move.”

12 PM, 27 Mar’08

Srinu explaining jeethu about sanjay and uday “These asses came well prepared! They just changed their clothes on this fking road, itself. That fatass wore the same shirt , he wore that day” . He added ” They warned all of us and said that they will be waiting near bus stop with eggs ” . Jeethu, with his evil grin, replied “let those fkers wait there and we will wait here ” . All of us agreed to that because that looks most plausible move to come out clean.

12:35 PM, 27 Mar’08

Viswa is laughing incessantly over his phone. He blabbered something. All we can comprehend is “Pavan is fked up!They egged his face up! Pavan is fked up. ” . We all joined him. We cant stop laughing But , deep down , we have the fear that soon or later we have to be in that position. So , after he hung up, viswa explained that srinivas narrowly missed but they got pavan. He ran off in such a haste that he even left his bag behind at the bus stop. We are laughing madly and guy passed us. He is satya. He is waiting there for no cause. We started to suspect that he is the spy in the story. We started our walk back to canteen to eat and ,most importantly, wait so that we can escape the fate that fked pavan. All through the walk, we cant resist ourselves from laughing about pavan , the ‘Bakra’ .

1:15 PM, 27 Mar’08

I ate the last piece of omlette, which is the only eatable thing in whole fking thali served in our esteemed canteen. Oh! Sorry , I bought that omlette for Rs.5 over regular thali. But, Dinesh just started eating his plate of shit (read meals in our canteen). I asked all of them to hurry up. So, that we can escape from the back gate. Just as we thought of it, the spy entered the canteen and behaving as if he came for some other cause. This fker is so good at acting that he overacted in this case which gave us clear clues that this ass came to check where we are. So, all of us ate hurrily and left the canteen and heading straight to the ground that is opposite to the admin block and walking slowly towards front gate. Spy guy crossed us over bike and heading towards front gate but when we slowed down , Satya, who is far from us and occluded by trees, bent down and saw us. If there is any test for spies, then this guy scores 0/100. Instead of giving clues to the Seth team, he is indirectly giving clues to us, which we will take anyway . But the real surprise is , Seth and his assistants came back from bus stop and waiting for us near front gate. I saw Seth , gigantic body shacking terribly with an emotion called anger and we are doomed.

..to be continued

Those are the times in my life when I completely lost interest in cricket, for whatever reasons, and started following tennis (say Agassi and then,Federer)and F1 (say God who rode in Red). But I never stopped following, atleast in print, the heriocs of my hero. I followed him religiously because he gave me that inspiration. He gave me that motivation. He gave me that hope that even a person who is not a born genius can achieve what a genius can achieve. He achieved it through perspiration. He achieved it through dedication. He acheived it through sweat and heart. Sometimes, I ask myself “Am I putting the effort what He ll give if he is doing this work? “. He redefined commitment for me.

And , he is ‘THE WALL’

Dravid is no genius. God gave him what He gave to every other normal person in this world. But , he made most of what he got, which is a very, very rare quaility (Remember Einstien(?) qouting ‘I use only 5% of my brain’). He is truly a self-made person and this is one of the foremost reasons why I adore him. Every shot he makes is well thoughtout which is the consequence of his calculated brain and water tight technique. He doesnt play by his instincts. He plays with his brain. He visualised, then practised and eventually perfected every shot in the textbook. He is a walking encyclopedia on batting. Watching his videos, itself, is a soul gratifying experience for any person who admires the craft called batmenship and a coaching lesson for any budding player who want to learn the skill called batsmenship. Watching him play is like listening to a symphony, which will caress you into a trance of admiration.

In this age of instant gratification, where the bang-bang version is thriving over classical form, many may not find admiration towards a classical purist like Dravid. But I can experience the elation, the excitement, the thrill, the gratification by watching a complete T20 match by just watching a pull shot to a seamer on a bouncy pitch or a late cut to a spinner on sub-continent pitch by my very own Dravid. Probably, I enjoy them more than the whole T20 match becuase they are executed with an unmatchable style which makes them uniquely beautiful. Recently, Dravid said my last 1000 runs (9000-10000) are a learning curve, this just reminds, me, of “An intellectual is someone educated beyond his intelligence”. Yes, Rahul is an intellectual who educated himseld beyond his intelligence.

Those are the days when india has no significant overseas test wins, leave alone a test series win. The team is branded as “hard to beat at home but will surrender easily overseas”. It took an agressive captain, Ganguly, to dream about winning , which is the first required quality to win and One Man was the cheif architect in turning those dreams into wins. Dravid scored nearly 23% of the total runs put up by India (with a batting average of 102.84) in the 21 Test matches won under Ganguly’s captaincy. Away from home , he made himself at home. Its not just his runs , but he contributed a lot of runs in partnerships. Dravid has been involved in the most century partnerships in Test history – 72. Dravid hasd this uncanny ability of inspiring the batsman at the other end (eg: Laxman) to perform exceedingly well (eventually, they used to steal the limelight from Dravid) which augured well for all those wins overseas. Dravid is the first player to score a century against every Test playing nation away from home, which takes a skill of a connoisseur. He played a huge role in many wickets that are taken by India’s greatest spinner (Kumble himself credited Dravid for this). He scored over 7000 runs at no.3 position but made himself available for opening and even demoted himself only for the sake of team. he kept wickets to made space for an extra player. He is your perfect team player. He is captain’s delight , infact pride.

For all those hard run singles, for all those beautifully executed boundaries, for all those well crafted centuries, for all those wins you brought to India, above all for all the happiness you brought to me , this is my tribute to you. This is my tribute to the all time greatest test batsman for India. This is my tribute to the greatest #3 batsmen of all time. This is my tribute to the greatest servent of Indian cricket.
